The Toyota Bandeirante is the Brazilian-built Toyota Land Cruiser — produced in São Paulo from 1958 until 2001, long after the legendary 40-series disappeared from the rest of the world. Named after the bandeirantes, the explorers who pushed into Brazil's frontier, it earned the same reputation: go anywhere, carry anything, and never quit.
Where the American FJ40 ran gasoline, the Bandeirante was built around tough, fuel-sipping diesel power and locally engineered components designed to survive the Amazon, the mining roads of Minas Gerais, and the dry backcountry of the sertão. The result is arguably the most durable expression of the 40-series ever made — and today, one of the most collectible.
