How Much Does a VW Bus Restoration Cost in 2026?
July 23, 2026
"How much to restore a VW Bus?" is the first question every future bus owner asks — and most answers online are either vague or wildly optimistic. Here's the honest version, from a shop that restores Kombis for a living.
The Single Biggest Cost Driver: Rust
On a Volkswagen Type 2, rust repair can quietly consume more than half of a restoration budget. Floors, rocker panels, wheel arches, battery trays, and window channels all rot, and every panel that must be fabricated or replaced adds labor. This is exactly why we start our builds with Brazilian Kombis: Brazil built the Bus until 2013, so we can source vehicles decades newer — with dramatically better metal — than typical US or European survivors. Better starting metal means your budget goes into paint, drivetrain, and interior instead of endless welding.
Where the Money Goes
Body and paint. Stripping, metal work, and a quality two-tone respray is typically the largest single line item on a solid bus — and the one with the widest quality range between shops.
Drivetrain. An air-cooled engine rebuild, transaxle service, brakes, and suspension bring the bus back to dependable daily-drivable condition.
Interior. Seats, panels, headliner, and flooring in factory style — or a camper conversion with sleeping platform and cabinetry, which adds meaningfully to the budget but transforms how you use the bus.
The hundred small things. Seals, glass, chrome, badges, wiring, lights. Individually cheap; collectively significant. This is the category first-time restorers always underestimate.
Realistic Total Budgets
Every project is different, but as a general guide: a mechanical sorting and cosmetic freshening on a sound bus lands in the low five figures; a comprehensive restoration of a solid Brazilian donor typically runs in the mid five figures; and show-level or heavily customized builds go beyond that. If a quote sounds too good to be true, it is — the cheap restoration is the one you pay for twice.
Is It Worth It?
Restored Type 2 values have climbed steadily for two decades, with split-window buses leading the market. A properly documented, properly restored bus has proven to be one of the few classics you can enjoy every weekend without watching your investment melt. And unlike a stock portfolio, it makes people smile at every stoplight.
Two Ways to Get There
You can commission a restoration of a bus we source for you — see our restoration process — or purchase one of our completed builds. Either way, the conversation starts the same place: tell us what you're dreaming of, and we'll give you real numbers.
